Thomas Was Alone

It’s a story with a lot of heart. The narrator does a great job of bringing to life a bunch of colored squares and the result is a relatively easy puzzler with good character.

The aesthetics of the game are relevant to establish the tone. The backgrounds are dark and slightly foreboding while the characters are bright and full of life. The music adds a layer of ambiance to the backdrop to further accentuate the style.

Story is handed out in morsels to the player by the narrator as the game progresses. It is serviceable and drives you forward a bit, but the insights into the characters give you that extra push to complete the game. Unfortunately some characters in the game are not as interesting as the original cast and they end up taking center stage in the latter half of the game.

While story progression is solid, the level design fluctuates. Some are quite tedious and the way the system registers platforms in motion is particularly wonky. You may also face one of the hardest platforming challenges in the game, then the next level has next to no challenge at all. The levels are a mixed bag, but do not detract from the overall experience enough to be too detrimental.

The ending of the game is abrupt and not very satisfying. The lead up is great, but the payoff is not. Fortunately the climb is what is most important, not the summit, so I would still recommend playing as referring to quadrilaterals as Thomas and Laura will be something I do for the rest of my life. Always keep moving up and to the right.
