Circe is a dramatized look into the life of the goddess. The writing paints her as an immaculate being capable of great compassion but also a sort of wrath that gods are known for. I really enjoy the journey we get to see her go on. Unlike other books there isn’t a clear central antagonist or problem to solve, unless you look deeper.
The story starts in her early days and continues through thousands of years. The author describes things from a goddess’ point of view so well that you would think she knows what it’s like. It’s hard to explain but everything about this style of writing is fascinating to me. Every few chapters is but a short blip in Circe’s life. Though she is a goddess she has many woes that make her seem more human. She is half-human, and because of this she is relatable in her struggles. She has always been looked down upon by the other gods because of her lineage and despite her willingness to please, she is still mostly disregarded. She rebels slightly by offering aid to her uncle who is being tortured and after that point she starts to do more things in her own way. It all comes to a head when she falls for a mortal man and comes up with a plan to make him immortal because she doesn’t want to be alone. This situation backfires and she does something the gods couldn’t even fathom and she regrets it wholeheartedly. Her punishment is isolation and though she is not supposed to receive visitors, she does get quite a few. The gods choose to ignore her and this is to her benefit. She comes into her own through an inspiring journey of self-discovery and freedom. She makes mistakes and learns from them, even finding (true) love along the way. Her character is so complex and it’s enjoyable to see how she grows.
There are too many points that stood out to me so I would definitely recommend this if you have any interest in Greek mythology as this is a nice spin on it as well as an intriguing story of self-growth and discovery. Great read!
