Caiphas Cane: Hero of the Imperium

I really enjoyed the dive into Warhammer. Caiphas is a complex character and always seems to find trouble. He somehow finds a way out each time and it’s a wild ride to watch him and see how he will weasel his way out of each situation.

It is an Omnibus so it’s three books in one with a couple short stories in between. The books are written “by Caiphas” but the Omnibus was compiled by another character in universe and they leave little comments about things he says, either correcting him or giving him credit where he actually deserves it. There are also some excerpts inserted from other characters to provide further context. They’re a nice contrast to Cain’s point of view and really help to fully picture the situation. This is a writing style I had not seen before and it was a joy to witness the back and forth narrative. When the character compiling the Omnibus is revealed, it only adds to my enjoyment.

Each story is about a different fight on a different planet for a different reason. All three books are good at contextualizing the situations to where you can understand what’s happening despite no prior knowledge of Warhammer. However some terminology I did need to look up, but with context clues it was not too often to damper the experience.

Caiphas does some truly heroic things throughout these stories and, even though he happens into these scenarios, you get the sense that he is a caring individual who tries to do right, despite his fear. The reluctant hero is a great protagonist and serves as a great introduction to a widely loved universe. If you’re not into Warhammer it’s a good starting point to test the waters and allows you to learn about a grim, dark universe through a humorous lens. Caiphas Cain is a phenomenal character with some deep emotions that even he has trouble understanding. This book makes me want to dive a little deeper into the universe, though I had no interest beforehand.
